In the second of our ‘handmade hotspot’ series, we catch up with the lovely Anna who makes the gorgeous felt hair accessories that arrived at Kitty & Polly a few weeks back. The hair accessories are truly handmade, right down to every petal being cut and sewn by hand.
Aspiring designer/makers take note…!
When did you first start making accessories ?
I only started my company about two months ago, but I’ve been sewing and making accessories for as long as I can remember! I kept getting asked to make things for friends, so I thought I’d try it out as a business.
How would you describe the style of your accessories ?
The range is based on exploiting the textural and sculptural qualities of felt, and its fabulous depth of colour. My designs explore a contemporary take on ‘floral’ that is luxurious, without being heavy or overblown.
What inspires you when creating a new accessory ?
Colour is my main inspiration – seeing how different combinations work and the effect of putting one colour next to another. My colour combinations are inspired by everything from fashion to art to nature…
What do you enjoy most about designing/making accessories ?
I love the process of making something by hand and seeing it emerge through that process.
Which other designers do you admire the most ?
There are some great undiscovered new talents on websites like Etsy, and I’m particularly interested in how people are keeping crafts going in this way, as small independent designers.
Any tips/advice for aspiring designer/makers out there ?
Focus on what you really love doing and just get your stuff out there!
What things have you got planned for the future ?
I have lots of designs in my head, just waiting to be made! I also love making bespoke pieces for people, so I’d really like to do more of that.
We have a range of hair accessories in different colours so for more details check out our handmade accessories page. Happy Shopping !

We’re a huge fan of blogs here at Kitty and Polly, especially those dedicated to finding you loads of gorgeous things that otherwise you would never come across. We’ve come across two recently that we think are worth a mention.
First one up is Beautiful Boutiques ..a blog that ‘pays homage to all the lovingly created independent Boutiques of Great Britain’. It’s got lots of features on fabulous shops and online stores that you might not have heard of so it’s worth checking out here.
The second one is FashionFindsUk..which brings you ‘the most stylish and on trend items, catwalk reviews, as well as letting you know little known and exclusive online boutiques, plus fashion advice and tips.
Again it’s worth a visit just click here

Over the coming weeks and months we’ll be doing a number of features on some of the fabulous people across the UK that design and make all the lovely gifts and accessories you see at Kitty and Polly’s online store.
First up is the lovely Emma Gordon who handmakes many of the gorgeous clutch bags you’ll see in our shop. Now I know that there are lots of fabulous bags out there but I think the finishing touches on Emma’s clutches really make them stand out..these are classic, elegant bags that are pretty much timeless (in our view, anyway!). We caught up with Emma recently to ask her a few questions.aspiring handbag designers take note !
WHEN DID YOU FIRST START MAKING HANDBAGS?
I set up my business in 2003. I had studied Applied Arts where I made a conceptual range of handbags for my final project. I then went to work for a handbag manufacturer in London designing
bags for high street shops. It was here that I learnt the ropes and
got the confidence to branch out on my own and set up my own label
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE STYLE OF YOUR HANDBAGS?
My bags are always ladylike with a twist. I like to keep a quirky
edge throughout each collection by using cute detailing such as bows, buttons and polka dot or stripy linings.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU WHEN YOU START DESIGNING A NEW COLLECTION?
I take my inspiration from everything elegant and ladylike. I love to
mix this with quirky detailing to keep my bags cute and humorous. I
love the light-hearted glamour of Audrey Hepburn in ‘Breakfast at
Tiffanys’ and the gorgeous pin-up girls of the 1950’s.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT DESIGNING HANDBAGS?
The thing I most enjoy is getting orders from all over the world.
It’s such a nice thought to imagine lots of girls around the planet
using my bags!
WHICH OTHER DESIGNERS DO YOU ADMIRE THE MOST?
My absolute favorite designer label is Moschino Cheap and Chic. I
love the way they mix elegant shapes and immaculate quality with
quirky patterns and details. For classic styling I love the timeless
styling of Chanel.
ANY TIPS/ADVICE FOR ASPIRING HANDBAG DESIGNERS OUT THERE?
My advice to aspiring designers is to get a website! Once your
collection is ready and photographed put it on your website – this is
a 24 hour portfolio that is available to everybody in the world. You
could have the most beautiful products, but if no one can see them you can’t sell anything.
WHAT THINGS HAVE YOU GOT PLANNED FOR THE FUTURE?
I have recently been making lots of order for weddings – for both
brides and bridesmaids. It’s been very successful so far so I am
planning to develop a range of bridal bags and accessories.
So, if you feel like indulging your handbag obsession, why not head over to our handmade handbags and treat yourself to a beautifully designed bag made by hand. Remember, we are offering 10% off to the end of June and all customers placing orders will have the chance to win a gorgeous hair accessory! And shipping is free when you spend £40 or more.

If you’re anything like me, you’ve got withdrawal symptoms now that Kirstie’s series is over for the time being. If you’ve been inspired to create the ‘handmade’ look in your home, let us know what you’ve been up to…send us some pics and we’ll post them on the blog. I’ve taken a bit of shine to collecting old plates for use around the house. So far I’ve collected 3, 2 of which I found in a Barnardo’s charity shop, the other in a fab secondhand shop in Bushmills which sells all sorts of secondhand books, curios, furniture etc..I could spend hours in it..sadly my husband cannot ! Here’s some pics of my recent finds..please feel free to share yours also !

And don’t forget, at Kitty and Polly, we have a cute selection of handmade homewares to add to your collection !

Last night was the final instalment in Kirstie’s Homemade Home series and focus moved outside to the garden. Like a lot of us, Kirstie was happy to admit that her gardening skills were limited so it was off to a local nursery, Petersham Nursey, for some ideas and inspiration. One idea she decided to incorporate into her outside scheme was a herb garden and I think she achieved this quite effectively by planting loads of gorgeous herbs into an old tin bath which she had picked up for a tenner. She also had a go at making a mosaic table (assisted by Emma Biggs, a mosaic artist – see link details below) and a multi coloured willow basket. Personally, I thought the willow was the star of the show..so many gorgeous colours and it just looks like such a lovely material to work with. I really want one of those baskets for my home ! As Kirstie was planning a lunch to celebrate completion of the house, the final craft she turned her attention to was decorating mini cakes with candy striping and red roses made from icing with edible glitter ..fab ! Then it was down to the finishing touches (laying the table, creating flower arrangements with the help of Judith Blacklock) before everyone gathered (family, friends and all the artisans) at Meadow Gate to celebrate with a nice lunch. It seems Kirstie has come in for a bit of criticism about the show (like trekking round the country in a 4*4 for example), but I for one really enjoyed it. It’s so refreshing to see a return to individually designed homes, homes full of character and interesting bits and pieces which just add to the charm. With so much doom and gloom around at the moment on the property front, it does remind us that our homes, after all, are for living in and that with a little thought, creativity and inventive use of secondhand pieces, you can really create something wonderful. I just hope there is a second series ! At least George Clarke is back next week to give us another interior design fix….

Oops..sorry. I’m late again with my post on Kirstie’s Homemade Home. Where does the time go ? Anyway, last week’s episode at Meadow Gate was all about the bedroom – all 5 bedrooms in fact ! Kirstie took some time out to investigate some more crafts in her pursuit of finishing touches for the different rooms including quilt making, reupholstering and spinning yarn. Of course, only a few minutes are dedicated to each craft, which is a bit of a downside to the programme, but at least it gives you a brief insight into each craft and some appreciation of the skill, time and love involved in each of them. I can’t think of anywhere else on telly at the moment that does that ! Creative inspiration was sought from a number of sources including the home of Vanessa Arbuthnott, a fabric designer based in the Cotswolds (see link below). By the end of the show, as you would expect, all 5 rooms had been beautifully transformed. The stars of the show for me were the two quilts – one, for the guest room, bought in a secondhand shop for around £200 (expensive, you could maybe get cheaper on Ebay), the second, for one of the kids’s rooms, was made by one of the ladies featured on the show…I’m sure it must have taken her hours and hours but it did look simply beautiful.
In the meantime, I continue to have a go myself – a few cushions now completed, humble beginnings I know but at least it’s a start. And I’ve also taken delivery of a knitting kit from the Wool Sanctuary for the knitted doorstop featured in Kirstie’s show. I’ll post a pic when my lovely mum in law has finished it !

According to a recent article in the Times Online, splashing out is good for you . New research by some American universities seems to suggest that ‘people who splurge on themselves are happier in the long run than those who squirrel away their pennies for the proverbial rainy day !’
However, according to the Times Online article, there are a few guidelines to bear in mind..
‘1.Ask yourself: “Do I deserve it?” Reasons to answer yes include clearing your credit-card debt, surviving a hideous week at work and not having splurged since Christmas.
2. Pay in cold, hard cash. It cuts the guilt factor in half and is the only way to know if you can truly afford it.
3. Splash out on something useful. The more you use/wear your purchase, the easier it will be to justify the money spent.
4. Spend big at sample sales and outlet stores. Your inner accountant loves a bargain.
5. Treat yourself to the most expensive version of everyday basics — tea bags, socks, chocolate. A little bit of luxury goes a long way.’
I’m not sure what other people’s views are on this but even in the ‘current economic climate’ a little bit of retail therapy always does a girl good. Thankfully, there are inexpensive ways to treat yourself..here’s a few of our little luxuries for £15 or less.

Oops, we’re a bit late this week with our update on Kirstie’s latest installment of Homemade Home ! Anyway, this week she turned her focus to the downstairs sitting rooms – an adult sitting room and a kids’ room.
To get some inspiration she paid a visit to Port Eliot, an estate in Cornwall with an eclectic mix of art, antiques and curios acquired through generations of the family who live there. Their main living room had a massive open fireplace and Kirstie was on the hunt to replace the one in her sitting room – from what I saw of it, it looked fine to me but it was ripped out and replaced with a reclaimed stone one by the end of the show. Next it was on to the local blacksmith’s to have a go at making a poker ( I thought she did a pretty good job) and then the local salvage yard where she came away with a firebasket, 2 pairs of curtains, a lamp and a sink for a sum, I think, of £100.
Needing some advice on colour for the rooms, she visited the home of Kaffe Fassett ( a designer of patchwork, knitwear etc) .. a home of full on colour I might add..not quite to my taste but I thought his message ‘find your voice in colour’ and ‘be a slob with colour’ was good – a call to all of us to experiment and be a bit more adventurous with colour. Finally, in search of some fun items for the kids’ playroom, Kirstie had a go at knitting ably assisted by Suzie Johnson and succeeded in knitting several rows under the mantra ‘ Poke it, strangle it, poke it again, rip its head off’ ! I was amazed by the speed of Suzie’s knitting and I thought the beach themed draught excluder she had completed by the end of the show was fabulous. Suzie actually has a website (see links below) where you can buy knitting kits so I’m off to buy one for mum in law who is a fabulous knitter and supplies all the hats, scarves, hot water bottle covers we sell at local craft fairs. I think I’ll go for the kit for a knitted house – it just looks so cute !
Meantime, my own efforts on the homemade home front continue. I now have my sewing machine (albeit one that is 25 years old), old fabric, sewing box, accessories etc – all I need is a user manual for a Jones 702 sewing machine so it’s off to Ebay to find one !
